I am not sure how seriously people take cybersecurity. Although we are living in an age where we are connected all the time, I think there is unconscious bias that those who are vulnerable to cyber attacks are very young or very old. From my personal experience, one of the best ways to access another patient’s health information is by browsing through someone’s unlocked computer. I think people naturally like to believe that those around them do not have ill will towards others, but people do unusual things when they are given the opportunity.
I think because my first job out of college was with a government contractor inside a federal building, I had daily instructions coming from upper management on how I needed to lock my computer even if I were near the vicinity of the computer. Due to multiple daily reminders coupled with paranoia, I locked my computer even when it was in plain site. This type of reinforcement and awareness education minimized highly sensitive information from being left vulnerable. I think this type of approach is a necessity in healthcare as breaches in security become more common.
