This week’s case of selecting the best candidate to serve as the CIO of MSMC was a fun challenge and not too far from what we will be facing when we join the workforce. Our team selected Sarah from the pool of candidates because we felt with her clinical background, finance experience through grant approvals, and prior experience with HIS implementation, she would fit well with the duties and image of a CIO. Additionally, she was described as someone who would manages well with people. Although there is no typical profile of a CIO, a CIO must be the visionary for the organization when it comes to HIT. This individual will need to uphold the responsibilities of running a team that is medically based and one that is technically based. For this reason, our team felt Sarah would fit the profile well. To add to this, leadership is more than just technical skills as we have experienced throughout our experiences and visits of various HCOs throughout the Puget Sound.

One aspect that my team did not address and I think is valuable to a candidate selection is the financial experience. HIS applications is highly costly and organizations require a lot of thoughtful preparation in selecting one that fits best for the organization. In addition to this, organizations must understand the contracts and limitations HIS applications have and what it plans to do with the shortcomings the organization will face. Afterall, HIS is not a one size fits all tool. Not only understanding and being able to decide on the outcomes, but also being able to push for plans that are risky yet worth taking is something CIOs ought to have as well.
